The story of the Island House Hotel began in 1852 when it was a waterfront beach house, the first summer hotel on Mackinac Island (Mich.), located between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. As tourism grew, the hotel moved in one block from the shoreline, and, by the 1890s the hotel was known as the Best Family Hotel.
Today it has been restored to its full Victorian glory on the water's edge, where visitors can enjoy nearby attractions such as Carriage Tours, the Butterfly House, Arch Rock, Victorian Village and the Boardwalk.
Before starting their day, Island House visitors can stop in at the Ice House for a full breakfast buffet or continental breakfasts, and, in the evenings dine at the 1852 Grill Room, affording views of the Straits of Mackinac.
